More 100th Day Activities

We continued 100's day activites with making necklaces out of 100 pieces of Ditalini. Every 5th Ditalini was blue, and every 10th Ditalini was red. While making the necklace we counted by 5's and used our math skills to decide how many more 10's we had to go until we got to 100. Then we sorted our collections of 100 things into groups of 10's, 5's, 20's, 25's, 50's and 100. We realized we were actually learning about multiplication. Lots of fun 'hands on' math. Lots of learning.

Celebrating the 100th day of school

We celebrated the 100th day of school with activities all about the number 100. First, we made a hat with the number 100 on it. We watched a puppet show that was specially written with jokes and information all about the number 100. We danced to a number rap song that counted to 100, using a different motion every 10 numbers. Then we went back to our room for learning centers. We continued writing to 1000, we counted out 10 pieces each of 10 snacks, made something with 100 Lego pieces, we looked for 100 words we knew in the newspaper, did a 100 piece puzzle, and played a game where the winner was the first to reach 100. Lots of fun activities. We will continue our celebration on Monday.

Gingerbread Learning Centers

Our first grade class was supposed to have a Distance Learning from the Puppetry Center in Atlantic Georgia. It was cancelled due to us having a two-hour delay because of icy weather. So we carried on by ourselves. We had learning centers all about gingerbread. We read two different stories on our level about the Gingerbread boy, worked with a Gingerbread story on the computer, made and clothed a Gingerbread puppet, took one bite off a Gingerbread baby cookie, graphed those bites by how many bit the head first, the right arm, left arm, right foot, left foot, etc... Most children bit the Gingerbread baby's head off first. Ouch! Good thing it is not real! We played a Gingerbread baby board game and had to follow directions if we landed on a spot with words. We also followed directions to decorate a Gingerbread boy. If our eyes were brown, we were to make two buttons. If our eyes were blue, make three. Etc... We had lots of fun. Our puppets were saying, "Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me... I'm the Gingerbread man!"

Special Student of the Week

Our special student of the week lives in a ranch style brick house with his mom, his dad and his brother. He has a dog named Benji. His favorite color is blue because blue is the color of the sky. His favorite subject is Math because when we do math it gets his brain smart. His favorite TV show is ‘Scooby Doo’ and his favorite books are Dr. Seuss books. He likes to eat Chocolate Cake. He likes to build club houses. He feels happy when his dad plays with him. When he grows up, he wants to be a basketball star because basketball is a good sport. If he could go anywhere in the world, he would go to Florida. He likes to play football a lot. He also likes to help his mom do small chores around the house. He feels he is special because he likes to make friends. He feels the best thing about him is that he is kind to his friends.

Distance Learning on Polar Bears

The first grade classes participated in a Distance Learning Program about Polar Bears. The presenter was at the Indianapolis Zoo. We have been studying polar bears, and were able to answer many of the questions the presenter asked us. We were pleased that we knew polar bears' skin is really black, and although their hair looks white it is actually like clear tubes. We learned many other interesting facts about Polar Bears. What a wonderful fieldtrip without ever leaving Howard School!

Rudolph Play

Our class performed a Rudolph Play for the kindergarten, first and second grade classes. We had many people absent that day, so many children had to take a new part at the last minute. We had children who were elves. reindeer and narrators. Everyone did a really nice job. And of course... Rudolph saved Christmas for children everywhere!
