Hoosier Wax Museum with 4th Graders

Our class visited the Hoosier Wax Museum which was presented by the 4th grade class in Howard school's gym. Each student picked a famous Hoosier, researched them, and prepared a report about that person. Then they made a background prop for that person. The entire school got to listen to interesting facts about all of the famous people who lived in Indiana. We pushed a button on their hand to make them talk. We went to a Wax Museum without ever leaving Howard Elementary. What a fun way to learn about Indiana History!

Learning Centers

Today for learning centers our class played a 'Penny Probability' game. We tossed two pennies, and graphed how many times they landed with both on heads, both on tails, or one on heads and one on tails. We worked with a contraction matching game where the children had to find the two words that matched the contraction. When we put the two words together with the contraction, it would make a heart. We worked with a Memory game using doubles plus 1 facts, and used our new Tag Reading System from Leapfrog. How fun! We are continuing to write our numbers to 1000. We have someone who has written to 850. He will probably make it to 1000 in a couple more weeks. We are learning a lot each week... and getting smarter every day!

Valentine Party

Our class made Valentine bags by cutting hearts to make and decorate a clown face. After the sacks were finished, we put them in ABC order according to our first names. Everyone mailed their Valentines to all their friends. On Friday, we all opened our Valentines. We found out we have lots of sweethearts and lots of people who love us! We got to make our own sundae during the party... even though it was a Friday! Ha! What a fun party.

Groundhog Day

February 2nd was Groundhog day. We made groundhog ears to wear, and learned that a groundhog is a mammal. It is a rodent. We learned that a groundhogs incisor teeth continue growing throughout their life. Groundhog is another name for Woodchuck. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? We found out what hibernate means... and that before coming out of his burrow, the groundhog goes into hibernation. We heard the groundhog saw his shadow. So there will be 6 more weeks of winter. Happy Groundhog's day!

Learning Centers

We were very busy during learning centers this week. We had a 'Store' center where the children had to count out dimes, nickels and pennies to pay for items. Then they had to count the total amount of all the coins. We also had a Groundhog game using Reading vocabulary and words ending with 'y'. For the Trading Post Center, the children learned to trade 5 pennies for a nickel, 2 nickels for a dime, and 2 dimes and 1 nickel for a quarter. The children played 'Bucking Bronco' on the computer which helped them do math facts quickly or they would get bucked off the horse. We are continuing our quest to write to 1000. Lots of hard work at centers... but always lots of fun!
