100th day of school Puppet Show

The Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade children at Howard Elementary culminated the 100th day of school activities by watching a puppet show. The puppets told facts, number stories and told jokes about the number 100. After the play the children danced to a song that counts up to 100. They would count 10 numbers and then do a fun action. Afterwards, they watched a movie about Zero the Hero. What a fun way to celebrate the 100th day of school.

The Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders at Howard Elementary wanted to try to collect 100 cans to celebrate the 100th day of school. The children brought in 301 cans which will be donated to a local food pantry! The children at Howard Elementary really care about others! They are awesome!

Our snack bag filled with 100 things to eat!

The children counted out 100 pieces of 10 different things to eat. 10 of each item equals 100!

The children rolled a die and then had to mark off that number of squares. The goal was to see who got to 100 first.

We are writing to 1000, 100 numbers at a time.

The children in Mrs. Stites' class participated in learning stations all about 100. The children gathered 100 pieces of food to eat. They took 10 pieces of each item. (10 times 10 equals 100!) They played a game by rolling dice and marking off that many squares on a 100's chart. The first child to get their whole chart filled was the winner. We continued writing to 1000. The children work on writing 100 numbers each week. That helps them see the patterns in counting. They read several books all dealing with the 100th day of school. They also wrote 100 words. The children were pleased to discover how easily they could read the words. (They are learning a lot more than they realize!) What fun learning centers! Lots of work. Lots of fun!

We had fun celebrating the 100th day of school!

We made necklaces with 100 pieces of Ditalini. We put blue ditalini on every 5th noodle, and a red one every 10th. Now we can easily count by 5's all the way to 100!

We brought in collections of 100's things.

We sorted our 100 objects into groups of 5's, 10's, 2's, 25's, 50's and 100's.

Organizing the Q-tips into groups takes lots of counting.

We are also learning to multiply!

Working on counting noodles and putting them into groups.

We wrote about what we would do if we had $100!

The boys and girls in Mrs. Stites' 1st grade class enjoyed the 100th day of school. We actually made a 100's week of it. The children brought in collections of 100 things and we sorted them by 2:s, 5's, 10's, 25's, 50's and 100's. We realized we were learning to multiply. We made necklaces using 100 pieces of Ditalini. We counted by 5's and figured out how many more noodles we had to go to reach 100. We wrote about what we do if we had $100. And ended the day eating a cookie with a 100 on it. What a fun way to learn!

Our special person of the week lives in tri-level house with his mom and his dad. He has a fish named Baby Jaguar. (Who died right after this bulletin board was presented.) His favorite color is green because so many things are green. His favorite subject is Writing because he likes to think about things and then write about them. His favorite TV show is ‘Tom and Jerry’ and his favorite book is Scooby Doo! He likes to eat crackers and cheese. He likes to ride his bike, play with his dad and fly his airplanes. He feels happy when someone tickles him. When he grows up, he wants to be a firefighter because he wants to help save people from fires. If he could go anywhere in the world, he would go to Florida. He has a lot of toys. He feels he is special because he is in his family. He feels the best thing about him is his mom and dad love him.

3rd graders work on Fluency

Mr. Betzner's 3rd grade class comes to Mrs. Stites' 1st grade class to read every week. The 3rd graders read to the 1st graders for fluency practice and then ask the 1st graders questions about their story. This week the 1st graders also read to their 3rd grade partners. Each first grader in Mrs. Stites' classroom earned a reading slip that they can include towards their Reading for Ribbons program. Every child benefits from our first grade and 3rd grade partner readers!

Our special person of the week lives in a 2-story white house with his mom, his dad, his sister and his brother. He has a dog Roxie and a cat Blackie. He also has a pet rabbit named Fluffy. His favorite color is aqua because it is a cool color. His favorite subject is P. E. because they play fun games. His favorite t.v. show is ‘Untamed and Uncut’, and his favorite books are any dinosaur books. He likes to eat his mom’s chili soup. He likes to play X-box. He feels happy when he plays football with his dad. When he grows up he wants to be a football player because he likes playing football. If he could go anywhere in the world, he would go to Florida. Our first grade class performed a Rudolph Play retelling the story of how Rudolph saved the day for Santa Claus and all the good children around the world. They did a nice job memorizing their parts.

Our first grade children joined the rest of Howard Elementary at Northwestern Auditorium for our annual Christmas Program. The children sang and played instruments really well. They looked so nice all dressed up! It was a fun evening!

We made all the wrapping paper and gifts for our families. The first graders made an angel with their faces on them and wrapped them in a wreath sack they made themselves. They made a Christmas tree magnet for their fathers and put them inside a card they stenciled themselves. Then wrapped the card in paper they stamp printed during center time. The children followed a recipe and made 3 clay dough ornaments then wrapped them in a Rudolph sack. Fun surprises for our families!

Good-bye Mr. Balmer

Mr. Balmer helped us one last Friday. We will miss him!

Mrs. Stites presented Mr. Balmer with a poem, a picture of him when he was in first grade, a picture of him now and pictures of all the children in our classroom.

She has a dog named Samantha, an Australian German Shepherd, a black chow Lab, and 2 goats named Sid and Stan. Her favorite color is blue because it is the color of blue birds. Her favorite subject is Reading because she likes to learn about new things and books give her lots of information. Her favorite TV show is ‘Animal Cops’ on Animal Planet. Her favorite book is the Bible. She has Bible stories. She likes to eat Mac and cheese. She likes to jump and play in the beans and corn on the trucks when her daddy and her uncle’s combine in the fields. She feels happy when she gets to spend time with her grandma. Making Bread and Butter

Getting ready to grind the wheat. We learned how wheat is grown and how it becomes whole wheat flour.

Yummm! The bread is cooked and smells delicious!

Mrs. Stites children read, compared and contrasted many versions of 'The Little Red Hen'. We also learned about how wheat is grown and ground our own wheat seeds. Then we followed directions on the recipe to make Whole Wheat No Knead bread. All the children helped to make it. We also shook heavy whipping cream to make butter. The milk that separated from the butter is butter milk. Yummy! We are great cooks!

The children made a pioneer button toy that worked similar to a yo-yo. And they made a ball and cup toy and tried to see how many times they could catch the ball in the cup. Fun afternoon!

The kindergarten through 2nd grades at Howard Elementary celebrated the 50th day of school with learning stations all about the 50's. The children learned to play Pick-up-sticks and Jacks. The put together 50 piece puzzles of the United States, played Hop-scotch, Jump rope and Hula hoop. They went to a pretend drive in and watched 'The Little Rascals' movie while eating a hotdog, potato chips and drinking a rootbeer float. In the craft room they framed and decorated a picture of themselves in their 50's attire. They went to the Library to learn about the real Dick and Jane books. (Mrs. Stites learned to read using those books!) Then the children topped off the day with a Sock Hop featuring Sandy and the Tooth Fairy. What a fun way to celebrate the 50th day of school!

The children in Mrs. Stites' first grade class performed a pumpkin play for the kindergarten through 3rd grade classes. The children did a very nice job memorizing their parts and performing the play.
Afterwards they recited several poems including Indian author James Whitcomb Riley's poem "Little Orphant Annie". What a wonderful learning experience to celebrate fall!

Students from the high school came to Howard Elementary and read a story about making good decisions. All first graders received a bracelet to remind them not to do drugs. Mrs. Stites was excited that Kayla was in her first grade class. It was so nice to see her all grown up and making good choices!

Learning Fire Safety with the Smokehouse

Each child got to hold the hose to see how heavy it was.

After getting inside the firetruck, we went to the back to see the bigger water hoses.

Smoke rises, so we have to stay down low.

The children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade classes at Howard Elementary learned about Fire Safety by visiting the Smokehouse which was brought to us by the Galveston Fire Department. The children entered a mock kitchen and were taught about dangers and how to prevent fires in there. Then they went into a mock living room and learned about potential dangers there. Next we went upstairs to a bedroom. When the pretend smoke came into the room, we felt the door using the back of our hand so if the door was hot our hand would not be burned. Then we crawled backwards down the stairs and went out to a meeting place outside. We counted to make sure we were all there. What a great way to learn about Fire Safety. Thank you Galveston Fire Department!

Apple Centers in Mrs. Dye's room

We traced our hands in order to make the trunk of the tree. Next we will paint green leaves using a sponge and red apples using a cork!

One pretty apple tree....where are the apples?

The children in Mrs. Stites' first grade class mixed with Mrs. Dye's first grade class in order to celebrate Johnny Appleseed's birthday. While in Mrs. Dye's class, the children painted apple trees by first tracing around their hand and arm to make the trunk. Then they painted the leaves green using a sponge. For the last step, they put on bright red apples using a cork. They made 'Apple Smiles' by following directions and using 2 apple slices, peanut butter and marshmallows. What a fun smile! The third station was a 'Memory' game, where the children uncovered and tried to match Reading vocabulary words by turning over two apple cards. What a fun, fun day!

Fieldtrip to Conner Prairie

We learned how to 'tease' the wool.

To tease the wool, we had to pull it apart. Then we twisted it to make yarn.

We all ground up corn kernels to make corn meal.

We made holes with an old-fashioned drill. It was hard work!

We had to twist it around and around and around and around.

We sewed apples onto a string. We will hang them up in our classroom to dry out.

We pretended to float in a dug out canoe.

We got to pet many animals. This was a friendly goat!

We dipped candles into boiling bee's wax.

The first grade classes went to Conner Prairie. We participated in a First Grade Pioneer program where we learned about log cabins, pioneer life, and chores children would have had to do. We played with toys pioneer children would have played with. This was an introductory experience for when we study pioneers in November. What wonderful educational 'hands-on' learning, that we will not soon forget! Lots of learning! Lots of fun!

In Mrs. Stites' class the children played Apple Bingo, made apple prints using apples as stamps, and played "Hot Apple" and "Apple, Apple, Pie". After the children had experienced all 3 stations, we switched rooms and they went to 3 other stations in Mrs. Dye's room. What a fun afternoon!

Making Applesauce

Most children in our class liked both the plain applesauce and the cinnamon!

Mrs. Stites is making apple graphs by sorting the apples in different ways. We sorted by color, size, and shape.

After we peeled, cored and sliced the apple, we cut it into tiny pieces and then divided the pieces into 2 piles.

Mrs. Stites' class made applesauce. First we peeled the apples, took out the core, sliced the apples and separated them into two crockpots. One we put cinnamon red hots in, and the other we kept plain. We let the apples cook all day long, stirring occasionally. At the end of the day we ate our applesauce. We are good cooks!

Grandparent's Day

Most of the grandparents stayed for lunch What a fun morning! We like Grandparent's Day!

All the children at Howard Elementary participated in outdoor activities for the last day of school. The children went through an obstacle course, played tug of war, jumped in a fun house, played with hula hoops, jumped rope, shot basketballs, ate popsickles, threw at a dunk tank and played corn hole. It was a fun way to end the school year.

Jr. Olympics

First through third grade children went to the Northwestern track to participate in the Jr. Olympics. They did the soft ball throw, jump rope, and long jump. They ran in events such as the 50, 100, 200 and 400 yard dashes. Our whole class participated in a relay race against Mrs. Dye's class. We had good attitudes and a lot of fun!

Incredible Edible Landfill

Dawn Winger, from the Howard County Recycling District taught the first graders about recycling. We need to Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle. Each child made an edible landfill using food as each level in the landfill. They had vanilla wafers as the soil, a fruit roll-up as the plastic liner, Twizzlers as the tubes to release methane gas, pudding and gummy bears as the trash, chocolate pudding for the dirt on top, and green sprinkles for the grass. Yummy. What a fun way to learn about recycling. Mrs. Stites was so pleased to see Dawn, because Dawn was in Mrs. Stites' first grade class many years ago!

Dinosaur Shirts for our Fieldtrip

This is a fun project!

We put paint on a sponge and dabbed inside a stencil. We had to make sure to get to all of the edges.

Learning about Money in a McDonald's Center

Laying out the correct change to 'buy' a hamburger, french fries, and drink.

After counting the money and getting the correct total, we need to reduce it to the least amount of coins.

He came up with the correct change! Good job!

Our 'hamburger' is made of 2 vanilla wafers as the buns, a chocolate fudge cookie as the hamburger, and yellow and red icing for the ketchup and mustard. Our french fries are the small string potatoes from a can, and the drink is Sprite. Yum!

Pie Throw for Lymphoma and Leukemia Society

Howard Elementary raised money for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society. Student Council members were assigned a classroom. Someone from that classroom could throw one whipped cream pie in the face of the student council member for each $20 raised by that class. The school raised enough money that the principal took a pie in the face, and also Captain Harold Vincent, our DARE officer. This was a fun way to raise a lot of money for a good cause.

Space Camp

Working under water to feel how astronauts work in space.

Catching marshmallows to show that food floats in space.

There was an emergency in the space shuttle! Push the right button to save the shuttle!

Rocketing to the Moon and back to Earth.

Tossing a bean bag through a loop to show how astronauts have to navigate the space shuttle through space.

Working to put nuts and bolts together underwater. Astronauts work with gloves to fix things.

Gravity keeps the planets in orbit and keeps us from falling off the earth. Gravity keeps the paper squares inside the bucket.

The shuttle has to land on a specific spot. We made paper airplanes and tried to land them on a mat.


We need enough power to rocket to the moon and back.

We had Space Camp in our room for Learning centers. Each child rotated through 5 stations set up to teach something about Space. We had nuts and bolts under water to demonstrate how it feels to work with gloves on in a heavier atmosphere. Each child blew up a balloon and hooked it to a straw on a string, then propelled their 'rocket' from the Earth to the Moon to show you need enough power to get there or you'd be lost in space. The children tried to catch marshmallows in the air, because things float in space. Then they tried to launch a bean bag through a hoop to demonstrate that the astronauts have to guide the shuttle to the correct spots. The children swung a bucket full of paper squares around and around to show that gravity holds us on the earth. Then they pretended there was an emergency in the shuttle and had to push the right button to save the shuttle. They made paper airplanes and tried to land them on the landing pad. We had a lot of fun experiencing concepts about Space!

We went to a Distance Learning about space presented by the Challenger Learning Center in Brownsburg, Indiana. Each child researched facts about a planet, asteroids or comets. Then we reported what we learned to Captain Cosmic. She taught us more information about the planets and presented it in a fun way. What an interesting way to learn about Space!

Howard Elementary students met in the cafeteria to listen to High School students from the Northwestern Gymnastic's team talk about Daring to INSPIRE! They spoke about saying kind words to others and not joining in when someone is being excluded or bullied. They gave every child a bracelet with the words "Dare to INSPIRE". Along with the bracelet were words that said: Where there is meanness, Dare to be NICE. Where there are glares, Dare to SMILE. Where there is turmoil, Dare to bring PEACE. Where there is exclusion, Dare to INCLUDE. Where there is gossip, Dare to REVERSE it toward compliments. Where there is CRITICISM, Dare to ENCOURAGE. DARE to INSPIRE OTHERS. The life you change just might be your own!

Rudolph Play

Our class performed the Rudolph Play for the kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades. Several parents came to watch also. The children memorized parts and sang songs. We like that Rudolph wasn't like everyone else... but because he wasn't, he was able to use what was special about him to save the day for children everywhere! Our class had a lot of fun and did a very nice job!

Mrs. Stites' mom and dad came to help with learning centers. Mrs. Stites' dad used to be a teacher and a principal and her mom was a school secretary, so they love working with children. Mrs. Stites' dad listened to children read the book 'A letter to Santa'. Mrs. Stites' mom helped children make a stocking card for their mothers' gifts. The children also made Christmas tree magnets for their fathers and played Christmas Bingo using their reading vocabulary words. We were working hard to get ready for Christmas! Mrs. Stites likes having her parents help out in the classroom. The children like it too. Mrs. Stites' dad read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and brought his Santa cane. We had a lot of fun!

Clay Dough Ornaments

While celebrating Christmas around the World, we studied the United States. As part of our study, we made Clay Dough Ornaments to put on our Christmas trees. Each child picked 3 different shapes to cut out of the dough. We read a recipe and followed directions to make the dough. (2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of water.) It's a very easy recipe to follow. We learned that when we see 1/2 cup, it means it takes 2 of those to make 1 whole cup. 1/3 cup takes 3. 1/8th takes 8. We were learning fractions without even trying. Each child has been busy painting their ornaments. They are looking really nice. We will be proud to take those home to our family to celebrate the Christmas season.

Santa's Workshop- learning Centers

Our class was a regular Santa's workshop this week. We were busy making gifts for special people in our lives. Shhh! We can't tell you what we are making! We made chains using patterns with white, red, green and yellow strips of paper. We are making something special for our mothers and fathers. We studied Germany, and made a 3-dimensional Christmas tree. Did you know the song Silent Night came from Germany? We are going to learn to sing it in German! We celebrated Hanukkah by playing a dreidel game. We learned about Judah and the Maccabees! We got chocolate coins called gelt! We had a lot of fun and are learning to do special things for special people in our lives. Christmas is all about giving to others!

Making Bread and Butter

Our class made bread out of the wheat we ground up earlier this week. We had to read the recipe and measure the correct amounts. We cracked the eggs, then poured in the flour and milk. After the bread was made we made our own butter using heavy whipping cream. We are good cooks! The bread and butter were delicious!

Native American Centers in Mrs. Dye's room

The two first grade classes joined together for Pioneer and Native American Indian centers. While in Mrs. Dye's classroom the children made and played an Indian snake stick game, made bead necklaces, made a feather headband and played a corncob tossing game. They enjoyed learning about how Native Americans played. Fun, fun, fun.

Both first grades joined together for learning centers about Pioneers and Indians. While in Mrs. Stites' class the children made a yo-yo button toy. They also learned about and ground wheat that they will use to make bread later this week. The children dyed yarn using blackberries and onion skins. They also made a ball and cup toy. What a fun way to learn about pioneer living!

Learning Centers this week were fun! We played a game of Slap! which dealt with words with ending blends. We wove a mat using a pattern like the Navajo Indians do. We played Turkey Trot Bingo with words with beginning blends. We also worked on vocabulary words which were written in American sign language. We had a lot of fun learning!

50th Day of School

The kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders celebrated the 50th day of school with very fun activities. Everyone dressed in 50's style clothing. The children went to 6 different rooms of learning centers about the 50's. We jumped rope and sang Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, played Hopscotch, and Hoola-hoops in one room. We learned to play Jacks and Pick-up sticks, did a puzzle of the 50 United States, made a picture frame for our very own picture, and read Dick and Jane books. We also went to a pretend drive-in and had hotdogs, chips and a rootbeer float while watching a black and white DVD of 'The Little Rascals'. We culminated the activities with a sock hop in the cafeteria which featured the DJ's 'Sandra Dee and the Tooth Fairy'! What a fun way to celebrate 50 days of school!
