Space Camp

Learning how to land a space ship on a specified area.

Astronauts wear gloves and have to work with no gravity.  The water makes the work harder.

Rockets need enough fuel to make it all the way to the Moon and back.

When emergencies happen, Astronauts need to be able to push the correct button in the dark to save the spaceship.

Astronauts have no gravity in space. Their food can float.  We are trying to catch marshmallows in the air.

    The children in Mrs. Stites' class participated in a Space Camp.  They went to various stations where they learned about a concept of space.  They threw marshmallows in the air and tried to catch them because there is no gravity in space.  They tried to throw a bean bag through a hoop to show they can guide their spaceship.  The children were blind-folded and spun around in space to see what they would do if an emergency happened in the space shuttle. Papers in a bucket will stay in because of gravity. The children blew up balloons in order to get enough fuel to rocket to the Moon and back.  They also made paper airplanes and tried to land them on a landing pad. What a fun way to learn about Space.

     The children at Howard Elementary raised money for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.  For every $20 earned by a classroom, a child from that class could throw a pie in the face of our Student Council volunteers.  Howard raised around $1000 to help send a cancer patient to camp.  The children at Howard Elementary care about others.

Special Person of the week

      Our special person of the week lives in a light blue house with her mom, her dad, her sister and her brother.  She has two dogs named Sophia and Pudge, and a cat named Midnight.  She also has fish.  Her favorite color is purple because some flowers are purple.  Her favorite subject is Gym because she likes playing snowball.  Her favorite TV show is ‘Swamp People’, and her favorite books are about animals.  She likes to eat pancakes and mac and cheese.  She likes to have water balloon fights. She has a swimming pool and likes to swim.   She feels happy when she is with her family.  When she grows up she wants to be a Zoo Keeper or a Police Woman because they help people.  If she could go anywhere in the world, she would go to St. Maarten or Chicago.  She thinks the best thing about her is that she wants to help people.  She feels she is special because God loves her.

Mrs. Stites' class went to the pool at Northwestern high school to learn water safety.  We learned to do bobs, front glide, back float, flutter kick, free style swim and we will learn to do the back stroke.  After our lessons some children went off the diving board.  Fun, fun, fun!

Special Student of the Week

     Our special student of the week lives in a red brick house with his 3 brothers, his dad and his mom.  He had a dog Abby and now has a dog Miley.  He used to have bunnies, but now has chickens.  His favorite color is blue is because of the Colts.  His favorite subject is Recess because they get to run.  His favorite TV show is ‘Criminal Minds’, and his favorite books are Indian books.  He likes to eat bacon and eggs and pizza.  He likes to play with Jace.  He feels happy when he he can go to his best friend Jace’s house.  When he grows up, he wants to be a cop because he wants to have a pair of hand cuffs.  If he could go anywhere in the world, he’d go home.  He feels he is special because he is himself!   He feels the best thing about him is that he has a juicy brain!

Celebrating Dr. Seuss

We made 'Cat in the Hats' using a small donut, white icing, M&M's for the eyes and nose, chocolate sprinkles for the whiskers, cherry and mint Life savers for the hat!  Fun to make and even more fun to eat!

Each of us made a 'Cat in the Hat' hat and we are showing some of the books we read.  Lots of rhyming!

At the graphing center, the children guessed which Dr. Seuss book they would get most often. Next, they took turns pulling out Dr. Seuss books from a Cat in the Hat bag, and graphed the results.

This game of strategy gave the children a change to roll a die and then either fill in stripes to finish their hat, or block someone else from completing their hat.  Big decisions.  Lots of fun.

Dr. Finkler shows dinosaur bones

Anna's father Dr. Finkler brought his dinosaur specimens from IUK to share with the first grade children.  He brought a footprint, some skulls, a replica of an egg, along with other dinosaur parts... including some dinosaur poo!  The children enjoyed his visit.  He was very interesting and we learned more about the different kinds of dinosaurs! 

Valentine's Day party

     Our class celebrated Valentine's day with a Valentine's party.  We made clown sacks and put our names on their hats.  Next, we put them in alphabetical order along the chalk board.  Then we brought in Valentine's and mailed them.  This was good practice for writing our friends' names and then reading the names we wrote.  We found out we all have a bunch of people who care about us.  What a day filled with love!
