Fieldtrip to Conner Prairie

We learned how to 'tease' the wool.

To tease the wool, we had to pull it apart.  Then we twisted it to make  yarn.

We all ground up corn kernels to make corn meal.

We made holes with an old-fashioned drill.  It was hard work!

We had to twist it around and around and around and around.

We sewed apples onto a string.  We will hang them up in our classroom to dry out.

We pretended to float in a dug out canoe.

We got to pet many animals.  This was a friendly goat!

We dipped candles into boiling bee's wax.

The first grade classes went to Conner Prairie.  We participated in a First Grade Pioneer program where we learned about log cabins, pioneer life, and chores children would have had to do.  We played with toys pioneer children would have played with.  This was an introductory experience for when we study pioneers in November.  What wonderful educational 'hands-on' learning, that we will not soon forget!  Lots of learning!  Lots of fun!

Fieldtrip to Conner Prairie

The first grade classes took a field trip to Conner Prairie. We participated in a Prairie Pioneer program designed especially for first grade. While there we went into a real log cabin and learned about how people lived a long time ago. We learned about wool and how it is cleaned and dyed. We also played several games pioneer children would have played. Afterwards we went on a tour of Conner Prairie. We were able to pet real animals, sit in a dug out canoe, and experience many things that would have happened in pioneer days. We will reinforce our experiences with several activities in November. What a wonderful place to learn about history!

Fieldtrip to Conner Prairie

Our class went on a fieldtrip to Conner Prairie, in Noblesville, Indiana. We enjoyed stringing apples, learning about animals and what an important part they played in the pioneer's lives. The children played with toys that pioneer children would have played with during our 'First Grade Experience' tour. Next, we went to the regular tour of Conner Prairie and saw sheep, cows, goats, real log cabins, Native American longhouses, a dug out canoe, a blacksmith, old- fashioned stores and an olden-day schoolhouse. The children got to dip a candle into the wax and they also explored a covered bridge. Lots to see and lots to learn. What a great experience!
