911 Emergency

The Howard County Sheriff's Department came to our school to talk with the first grade classes and present a program entitled "911 for Kids". They helped the children learn how to identify emergency situations and how to call for help if it is needed. They played a quiz game in which the children had to decide if it was a situation to call 911 or not. Everyone received a plastic school tools holder, a pencil, an eraser, a sticker to wear, and an emergency sticker for their phone. We learned how important it is to know our address and telephone number in case there is an actual emergency.

Trash to Treat

The Howard County Recycling center gave a presentation to the first grade classes called "Trash to Treat". They showed us the 'recycle' symbol and taught us to look on the bottom of plastic objects for that symbol. If we see the symbol on plastic or glass, we should recycle it. We should also recycle any paper products. They taught us the 4 R's for reclycling. Re-use, reduce, re-think, and recycle. They taught us about landfills, and then we made our own landfill that we could eat. It had a plastic liner (fruit gummy roll), gravel (cocoa puffs), and trash (vanilla pudding). We sealed it with a vanilla wafer cookie, and then put grass on the top (green sprinkles). We learned that we need to take care of our Earth... and that we should consider every day as Earth Day!

McDonald's Food Center

Our class had a pretend McDonald's center this week. The children had to count out the exact change in order to buy a hamburger, french fries, and drink. Then we traded the money down to the smallest amount of coins. If they could count it correctly they got to 'buy' the treat. The hamburger was really two vanilla wafers with a chocolate cookie inside. Red and Yellow icing were the catsup and mustard. (Several children said they didn't like mustard. They just liked plain hamburgers.) The french fries were potato sticks. The food was delicious. The center was a fun way to emphasize the importance of learning how to count money.

Captain Cosmic Distance Learning

Our Distance Learning fieldtrip to see Captain Cosmic from the Brownsburg Challenger learning center in Brownsburg, Indiana was really fun. We had studied about the planets and our Solar System. Each child researched information about a planet. Captain Cosmic asked us questions and then taught us more information. What a fun way to learn.

Space Camp

We had Space Camp during Learning Centers this week. We rotated through 5 stations that were set up to help us learn various concepts about Space. We blew up balloons and taped them to a straw on a string and shot the balloon to the moon to learn about the rocket's thrust of energy and power. We put nuts and bolts together under water while wearing gloves to demonstrate how it feels to perform tasks while experiencing weightlessness in Space. We tossed marshmallows in the air and tried to catch them to show the lack of gravity. We also threw a bean bag through a hoop in order to show how the astronauts must guide the shuttle where it is supposed to be. At one center the children experienced what would happen in an emergency. Unfortunately, many of the children made the shuttle self-destruct! (We are glad this is just pretend!) The children made paper airplanes and tried to land them on a mat to show how the shuttle must land in a specific area. Lots of Learning! Lots of fun!

Happy Easter!

We had a fun last day of school before Spring Break. We finished our sparkle eggs and made a bunny basket to hold them. We made finger puppets and learned an Easter poem to go along with the puppets. Mrs. Stites provided candy and eggs so the children could enjoy a fun candy and egg hunt in the room. We had a great day. Now we will enjoy a whole week off for Spring Break!

Writing to 1000!

These four children finished writing to 1000 at our Learning Centers this week. Our class is making very good progress, and we are hoping that each child will make it to 1000. Now these children will begin higher-order thinking math problems to make their brains grow even more! What an accomplishment. We are proud of them.
