Pretending to carry water.

Standing with a horse loaded with supplies.

Sitting in an old school house.

Riding on toy horses.

Waiting for their turn to grind corn.

Pretending to carry water.

Drilling a hole by going around and around and around.
The first grade children visited Conner Prairie.  They participated in a program designed specifically for first grade.  Then they spent the rest of the afternoon going on the regular tour of Conner Prairie.  They learned a lot about Pioneer ways.

Galveston Smoke House - Fire Safety

Fireman going over safety rules in the pretend living room.
Learning safety rules in the pretend kitchen.

Sitting in the pretend upstairs bedroom.

Oh no!  The smoke alarm is sounding! Crawl so you don't inhale the pretend smoke.

Learning all about the firetruck.

The 2nd group is ready for their lessons.

We liked looking at the firetruck.

Our class would like to thank the Galveston Fire Department for helping us learn about fire safety!

Our Superintendent Comes to First Grade

Our Superintendent Ryan Snoddy visited our first grade classroom and read the book he loved to read to his children when they were young.  It was a Berenstain Bears book.  We enjoyed listening to Mr. Snoddy Read.  We were glad he visited our room.

Indiana Wesleyan Student Helper- Miss Peach

Miss Amelia Peach is a student at Indiana Wesleyan University. She is helping in our classroom on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  She is participating in our room as part of her course study at the University.  We enjoy having her in our classroom.

Apple Activities

Making an apple with torn paper and a paper plate.

Playing Apple Bingo to reinforce our reading vocbulary.

Making apple prints using apples cut in half showing the side shape and also the star in the middle.

Making a pattern with the apples.  Painting is fun.

Sounding out reading vocabulary for Apple Bingo.  We used Apple Jacks for our markers!

Making apple prints is fun!

We cut a handle right onto the top of the apple.  It makes it easy to hold.

Apple prints are fun to make.

Trying to sound out the reading vocabulary word before finding it on our Bingo Board.

Making a red delicious apple.

Celebrating Johnny Appleseed

Celebrating John Chapman's birthday... Otherwise known as Johnny Appleseed.

Looking at Mrs. Stites' apple collection.

Making a book about Johnny Appleseed.

Putting together a puzzle to make a picture of Johnny Appleseed.  It is made entirely of triangles so we have to work to make the pictures match.  It is really hard work.

Making the book to celebrate Johnny Appleseed!  Lots of learning!  Lots of fun!

Making Applesauce

Look how long the apple skin is!

Removing the skin of the apple before we take the core out.

We took the seeds from the core to use for more activities later.

Her apple skin stayed together!

We are getting lots of seeds from the cores of our apples!

It's fun making applesauce!

We put half of our apple into the 'plain' crock pot, and the other half in the 'cinnamon' crock pot.

Long apple skins.

Fun way to peel an apple!

Chopping up the apple before dividing it into equal halves.
We made applesauce by peeling, coring and chopping up our apples into equal halves.  When we cored the apple we ended up with 8 pieces.  We had to divide those pieces equally into the two crock pots. Later we ate our two kinds of applesauce and tallied who like the plain the best and who liked the cinnamon the best.  (The plain won!!!)  We found out we are really good cooks!  Yummy!

Apple Graphing

Graphing apples by 'Stem' and 'No Stem'.

Graphing apples by 'Short and Round' and 'Tall and Skinny'.

Graphing apples by 'Small', 'Medium', and 'Large'.
Each child brought in an apple to be used for apple activities.  We brainstormed ways we could sort the apples.  Later we used the apples to make applesauce and apple prints.
